LyndenTech http://www.lyndentech.com Helping to find the best solutions for optimizing your business Fri, 04 Jun 2010 10:03:01 +0000 http://wordpress.org/?v=2.8 en hourly 1 What is page Rank? http://www.lyndentech.com/what-is-page-rank http://www.lyndentech.com/what-is-page-rank#comments Thu, 25 Mar 2010 17:35:46 +0000 admin http://www.lyndentech.com/?p=321 Page rank is basically a count of sites that link to your site.

In more depth it takes into account the PR of the site that links to yours. For example if a PR7 site links to yours you would normally get a PR6 straight away.

There has been a lot of discussion about PR around the net. But getting a few links from high PR sites is more important than a load from low PR sites. There is a ratio, and my view is that there is a scale of about 8. i.e. a PR 2 is *8 more important than a PR1.

i.e. a PR3 is 8×8 more important than a PR1
a PR4 is 8×8x8 more important than a PR1
a PR5 is 8×8x8×8 ” than a PR1

But when it comes to ranking it not only the PR that is important, it is the “theme”. Thus getting links from sites that have a similar site to yours is very important. All these sites that try and get links from any site are not much good for themselves.

Getting inbound links from loads of sites with different themes will be diluting the calculated theme of their own site as Google not only looks at on page factors (body text, meta description) etc but also the theme of the sites that link to you.

Thus:

1) Look for high PR sites to get links from (but don’t ignore the others)
2) Look for sites with a similar theme
3) Don’t swap links with sites that will link to anyone
4) (not mentioned above) if a page has tonnes of links on them, the imputed PR to your site will be diminished accordingly.

Google Apps Migration available to Exchange users http://www.lyndentech.com/google-apps-migration-available-to-exchange-users http://www.lyndentech.com/google-apps-migration-available-to-exchange-users#comments Tue, 23 Mar 2010 08:06:33 +0000 admin http://www.lyndentech.com/?p=303 Microsoft may not be too happy. Google just launched a migration tool from Microsoft Exchange to Google Apps for corporate users. Not that it would take away customers that is, companies will need to assess the service provided, compare prices and features. Because it is not free, the migration tool is only available to paying users of Google Apps Premier and Education Edition.

The migration requires only 4 easy steps, without the possibility of data loss while performing the update you can still use Exchange.

There is a page with resources and information: Switch from Microsoft Exchange.

Three effective ways to increase traffic to your website http://www.lyndentech.com/three-effective-ways-to-increase-traffic-to-your-website http://www.lyndentech.com/three-effective-ways-to-increase-traffic-to-your-website#comments Tue, 23 Mar 2010 07:42:50 +0000 admin http://www.lyndentech.com/?p=297 Your website is good, and you have a business idea, but no visitors, you’re telling yourself, Help!, I need traffic to my website now, I’d like to share with you how to drive traffic to your site web. There are about fifty methods you can use, but I’ll just mention three here.

When I need traffic to my website we can immediately use free marketing methods. Why? Well, first because they are free. Second, are is a residual. What I mean by that?. The residual methods means that they will be available forever. Unlike paid advertising, which is only visible on the Internet for the time period you’re paying for them. After that is gone.

These business methods are free to drive traffic to your website:

1. Article Marketing

In my personal opinion Article Marketing is very powerful and effective. Start writing articles on topics related to your theme, using some key words and relevant keywords. Make a brief but informative article. Enough to arouse the curiosity of readers who want to know more, and visit your website. You can add a link to your site in the last paragraph. If you write an authoritative article is good, it will have an impact in the blogosphere along with the benefit of “backlink” for search engine rankings.

2. Video Production

Another free marketing method I use when I need  traffic to my site is video production. Like article marketing, but with moving images and audio. Both Google and people love videos. Make a short video on a topic related to your business and add keywords. When you’re happy with your video you can upload it to YouTube for example.

3. Blogging

You may think that blogging is an old and obsolete method, that is wrong, blogs are easy to configure and can drive traffic to your website as long as blogs are being used properly. Start a blog about your business or related topics.

Come off as someone knowledgeable in your field and write interesting articles that people will enjoy reading, you’ll quickly realize people beginning to participate in your discussions. If you need traffic to your site this is a necessary resource. I personally use Blogger but I also recommend WordPress both are great platforms.

4. Social Media Marketing

Create an account and a profile in the major social networking sites, like Twitter, Facebook, Bebo, Hi5, etc. .. just to name a few. Put a picture of yourself on your profile page and include a little about yourself, your interests and provide a link to your website. Note, however, you are immersed in social media and not in a real life business, so try to abstain from spamming your business in the face of people.

Instead, find people with a social mentality, which share common interests. Maybe you have a hobby you want to share or personal interests. In doing so, meet people who have the same affinities. Sooner or later you will be asked about your business and what exactly you are doing. Become the hunted. Being the hunter in online marketing is the old school methodology.

In this article I refer only to the free marketing methods we can use to drive traffic to your website. Of course you can choose to invest some money and start using banner advertising and PPC. But as I said before, these methods are temporary and can be costly.

The death of keywords in metatags. http://www.lyndentech.com/the-death-of-keywords-in-the-metatags http://www.lyndentech.com/the-death-of-keywords-in-the-metatags#comments Tue, 23 Mar 2010 06:52:54 +0000 admin http://www.lyndentech.com/?p=283 Quite a few years ago the metatags were a very important part of seo. Where we  did meticulous studies to choose keywords for metag keywords. Like everything else, to the point that a large number of pages focused on putting keywords in metatags and keywords in a repetitive fashion in order to  drive traffic just stop, Googlebot left in the background the importance of such words for years.

Ever since they have been having less importance … But now Matts Cutts of Google tells us that metatag Keywords are not taken into account for Google positioning.

You can see video of Matts Cutts

Microsoft to sell 300 million copies of Windows 7 in 2010 http://www.lyndentech.com/microsoft-to-sell-300-million-copies-of-windows-7-in-2010 http://www.lyndentech.com/microsoft-to-sell-300-million-copies-of-windows-7-in-2010#comments Mon, 15 Mar 2010 05:00:35 +0000 admin http://www.lyndentech.com/?p=275 At least that’s the goal that Microsoft has set this year. As it was announced by its Chief Operating Officer Kevin Turner as part of the CeBIT Global Conference, the Redmond company is very pleased with Windows 7 and believes that their product is its best ever created.

Turner himself said: “When you think of Windows 7, we will think it was the most successful operating system that we launched in our history. It is the highest quality operating system we’ve ever launched in our history. “

Despite the lack of humility that might have been showed by its Chief Operating Officer of Microsoft with these statements, its also not very far from reality, considering that only within the first 4 months since its launch its already sold 90 million copies and counting.

However, Microsoft can not jump to glory after the success of this operating system, although most blogs give positive reviews to Windows 7 themes, the competition never stops. And competition is fierce:  Google operating system.

Will Microsoft achieve the goal of 300 million Windows 7 sales for this year?

To Twitter or not to Twitter: that is the question … http://www.lyndentech.com/to-twitter-or-not-to-twitter-that-is-the-question http://www.lyndentech.com/to-twitter-or-not-to-twitter-that-is-the-question#comments Thu, 04 Mar 2010 07:37:29 +0000 admin http://www.lyndentech.com/?p=252 You may have seen this formula for success on the Internet thousands of times, but it does not mean it is no longer true. The steps to making money on the internet are:

  1. Search for a group of people who need something and are willing to pay for it.
  2. Create a website offering this product.
  3. Show your page to that group of people.

You may have seen it many other ways, but it is always the same. Find your niche, create your page and get traffic to it. And I am not just talking about creating eBooks to sell. A product can be a page of information (eg membership page), or a blog, etc.

The point is that if you follow all these steps, success must come. No questions about it.

The problems come when we do not focus on any of the steps, or when we try to do everything at once, or when we start to go on reverse instead of going forward. If you start creating a site to sell a product that you think will work well but you have not checked if there is a potential market for it, you may start  to bite your fingers.

One of the dangers of being involved in our community “internet marketers” is that trees sometimes make us lose sight of the forest. For example, you have not spoken of anything other than Web 2.0, Twitter, Facebook, etc.. and it seems that 2.0 is the most important for our business. Well, you have to put things in perspective.

For my 2.0 marketing techniques they are very important, and so I have the blog you’re reading my Twitter account, Facebook, etc.. I enjoy being in contact with you and I use it to promote my products, but also to receive feedback and know what you my fans and friends think.

But there is one very important thing that should not be overlooked: I ALREADY HAVE A PRODUCT! (or several:))

My blog and pages that you know are about internet marketing  niche the same niche that you belong too as do all my readers and followers in Twitter. So web 2.0 is the tools I used.

But the first step will be always identify your niche market BEFORE you start advertising.

What do you mean ? That should not create a Twitter profile?

NO! I’m not saying that. Just the opposite. If you are an entrepreneur / a very good idea is to do setup a Twitter profile now and become part of our community, “Mark-twittered. But you must approach it with different eyes. If you don’t already have a product, our community is going to help you “learn” not to promote. Thanks to the good people you meet around here, you will be able to question and the answer you kindly.

For example, if you created a new page to sell “custom shirts, you can ask the community to see what they think about the design, sales letter, etc.. But you will not get any sales in the community. Unless you are marketing your products …

Which brings me to one of the most common errors: start with the niche of “make money online”. It is normal, you begin to follow the marketing gurus, and it is natural to start selling such products. But what a mistake! More complicated is the niche that exists! As I said many times: find another niche in which you can apply all the techniques you learn in this one! You will do much better.

But as always, this is my particular view on the matter. What do you think? Leave a comment below. Thank you!

Computer forensics http://www.lyndentech.com/computer-forensics http://www.lyndentech.com/computer-forensics#comments Sat, 25 Jul 2009 06:55:00 +0000 admin http://www.lyndentech.com/?p=222 Computer forensics has always fascinated me, and occasionally when computer forensics comes up in the news, they focus on basic stuff like inspecting some one’s Internet Explorer cache to see what they have been visiting on the Internet. A case came up like that locally here – a husband was accused of drowning his wife in the bath tub, and they found his browser history full of links to adult-cheater web sites. This provided evidence that he had an apparent motive to kill his wife.

I suspect that such a candidate would need to have a mastery of a lot of wide ranging technical areas, including:

Knowledge of popular, and niche, encryption software (which hides evidence)
Knowledge of all of the common email clients
Knowledge of all of the common web mail clients
Ability to undelete files and to recovery hard drives that have erased but possibly intact evidence on them
Knowledge of hacking techniques for networks (itself an enormous subject)

This would be a huge undertaking for someone to study, even if they had a great technical background already.

I think that in real life, most forensic jobs in the IT area use reformed “black hat” hackers with criminal backgrounds who already really, really understand the culture and the tools.I tend to think that a regular degreed professional wouldn’t really know many aspects of the culture without immersion in hacker society for awhile.

Then there’s the area of application:

Criminal investigations
Financial investigations (insider trading, etc)
National security
Network security for corporations and institutions

Your online presence – Social Networking Sites http://www.lyndentech.com/your-online-presence-social-networking-sites http://www.lyndentech.com/your-online-presence-social-networking-sites#comments Sat, 25 Jul 2009 06:51:10 +0000 admin http://www.lyndentech.com/?p=219 support

From a business point of view, I’m wondering what constitutes ‘your online presence’? There’s your own site (personal and business), Linkedin, Facebook, posting on related forums, Twitter, YouTube, ‘news flashes’ – newspaper or online, etc.

How far do you go and what information do you provide?

I’ve seen successful business’s that disclose virtually nothing personal while others have names, pictures, video, their Linkedin or Facebook stuff, etc.

It seems that some want to be found or heard while others either don’t have the need or want to be “personally” identified.

I’m wondering what our readers here are doing and why. Also have you gotten any measurable results from your efforts?

Linkedin – Be whoever you want to be http://www.lyndentech.com/linkedin-be-whoever-you-want-to-be http://www.lyndentech.com/linkedin-be-whoever-you-want-to-be#comments Sat, 25 Jul 2009 06:48:01 +0000 admin http://www.lyndentech.com/?p=216 I was reviewing my connections and noticed that some people “embellish” more than others.

Case in point was a listing for “Sr. .NET Developer” for our catchall MS guy. He did all the misc tasks like baby sitting our daily builds, some networking, a bit of programming and put up a basic website using DotNetNuke. Nothing that I would assign that title to but there it is.

“Sr” describes his age better than his experience, while the “.Net Dev” part I’m sure came from installing and setting up DNN. What gets me is that several jobs later; he’s now an “IT Director”. All I can say is WOW? I know this guy and while he’s good, apparently talk and BS carry you further than actual experience or know how because he’s not that good.

So how much do you embellish? After all a resume is more about advertising than a biography and as long as it’s not an outright lie, who can dispute it?

Yes, I’m rethinking what my resume says. Not looking to BS but to enhance my experience.
